Comprehensive Dental Exams for New and Existing Patients
The initial dental exam is the all-important first step toward establishing yourself as a patient of our practice. During this exam, we will perform a thorough review of your dental and medical history, examine your head and neck muscles and temporomandibular joints (TMJs), screen for oral cancer, and evaluate your bite. In examining your mouth, we will assess the state of any dental restorations you currently have and look for signs of possible decay. We will also conduct a complete exam of your gums, as gum disease is more easily treated and maintained if detected in its earliest stages.
A full set of dental x-rays, along with other diagnostic tests, will allow our dentists to identify potential problem areas in your mouth and suggest the treatment plan best suited to your needs.
All patients who are new to our practice will undergo a comprehensive dental exam. Dr. Berger and Dr. Cohen support the American Dental Association recommendation that our current patients undergo a comprehensive exam and a full set of dental x-rays every three years.
Periodic Dental Exams
The American Dental Association suggests that established patients of a practice visit their dentist twice a year for periodic check-ups. These routine appointments consist of far more than simply professional cleanings. As with the comprehensive exam, check up x-rays will be taken and the teeth and gums will once again be evaluated for possible damage and signs of disease, and your at-home oral hygiene regimen will be reviewed. Periodic exams are excellent opportunities for patients to learn more about their teeth and mouths and become more active participants in their own dental care.
Periodontal Care and Treatment
The soft tissues that support the teeth, commonly known as the gums, are among the most vulnerable in the human body. Periodontal disease is an inflammation of the gums, causing them to lose attachment to the teeth and its supporting bone. The bacteria inherent in plaque is the cause of the inflammation, and subsequent infection, of the gums and supporting bone. As this bacteria filled plaque is left undisturbed, it hardens and becomes calculus or tartar, a hard, tenacious substance, which is impossible to remove with a toothbrush. There are several stages of periodontal disease, ranging from gingivitis (early stage) to periodontitis (advanced stage). As this infection progresses, the bond between the gum tissues and the teeth begins to degrade. During gingivitis, periodontal disease is actually quite treatable; however, if left untreated, gingivitis can lead to the more severe form of periodontal disease, periodontitis.
One of the reasons that periodontal diseases so often go untreated is that they manifest mild symptoms, and sometimes no discomfort whatsoever, in their earliest stages. This is why it is so essential for you to visit the dentist twice a year for periodic check-ups; you may be experiencing the first stages of gum disease without even realizing it. By catching gingivitis right away, Dr. Berger is able to attack the disease before it has a chance to do any substantial damage and significantly prolong the health of your teeth.
Even if you have a more advanced form of periodontal disease, our dentists can provide treatment to halt its damaging effects while restoring the health and beauty of your mouth. You should seek dental help right away if:

MI Paste™ is a revolutionary product that uses RECALDENT™ (CPP-ACP), a milk-derived protein, to restore the minerals that help to protect your teeth from cavities. The tasty, sugar-free paste encourages the production of saliva and reinforces the teeth by replenishing calcium and phosphate. MI Paste aids in patients whom experience temperature sensitivity, dry mouth, white spots also known as “hypo-calcification”, and an acidic saliva. Patients emerge from treatment with stronger, healthier teeth.
Sealants and Fluoride Treatments
The old saying “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure” holds especially true in dentistry. Among the many preventive treatments we offer at our practice, sealants and fluoride treatments help to protect healthy teeth from decay. Sealants are applied to teeth as a malleable plastic that, when hardened, protects the chewing surfaces of teeth while remaining virtually undetectable. Fluoride is a mineral that is essential to the health of a tooth; although it occurs naturally in water and many of the foods we eat, professional-grade fluoride treatments provide a quick and convenient way to re-mineralize the teeth.
